Recently, Malaysia Airlines Group(The decision of MAG to purchase 30 Boeing 737 aircraft has sparked widespread attention and discussion. In response to the call from some non-governmental organizations to cancel the order, transportation think tanks and aviation experts have spoken out, emphasizing that modernizing the fleet is crucial for the survival and development of MAG.

It is reported that,The aircraft ordered by MAG this time include 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10, which are expected to be delivered before 2030, with the option to purchase an additional 30 aircraft. This decision is aimed at responding to the rapid expansion of the Southeast Asian aviation market, which is expected to triple in size over the next 20 years. However, due to Boeing's association with Israel, the order has sparked opposition from non-governmental organizations such as BDS Malaysia, who are demanding that the government cancel the deal.

Faced with controversy, transportation think tankRahman Huxian, co-founder of "My Mobility Vision", stated that MAG's fleet is on average 15 years older than its competitors, and choosing energy-efficient and long-range Boeing 737-8 and 737-10 aircraft is a wise and necessary decision. He pointed out that any hesitation could cause MAG to lose a significant share in market competition and weaken its competitiveness. Rahman also emphasized that a balance must be struck between economic reality and moral stance, and completely tearing up the agreement with Boeing could seriously affect the local economy, as Boeing's commercial aircraft division currently collaborates with 43 Malaysian suppliers and provides over 1200 high skilled local employment opportunities.

Aviation expert Gamal·Singh Kehler also expressed doubts about canceling Boeing orders. He pointed out that if MAG cancels the order, whether there are other suitable alternatives is a thought-provoking question. At the same time, canceling the Boeing contract may result in MAG losing the deposit and paying huge compensation, causing a significant impact on the group's financial situation. Therefore, he believes that MAG must consider fleet integration and aircraft delivery issues when making decisions to ensure normal operations in the future.

Regarding this controversy, Rahman suggestedMAG adopts a more realistic response strategy, including renegotiating with Boeing and demanding its commitment to contribute to humanitarian or infrastructure projects; Diversified fleet procurement, allocating orders between Boeing, Airbus, and Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC); And strengthen local aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, utilizing the funds saved by energy-saving fleets to invest in the local aviation industry.
