1876Shanghai Wusong Railway
exist149 years ago today, July 3, 1876, the first railway in China, the Songhu Railway, was officially opened for operation. The railway connecting Shanghai via Jiangwan to Wusong has a total length of about 14.5 kilometers. Its birth not only marked the beginning of China's modern transportation industrialization, but also reflected the humiliating history of China's sovereignty being eroded during the late Qing Dynasty. As early as 1866, the British ambassador to China proposed a plan to build a railway to transport goods from Wusong Port to Shanghai, but it was rejected by the Qing government. The British firm Jardine Matheson, unwilling to give up, established the "Wusong Road Company" in 1875 and illegally transported railway equipment from Britain to China to forcibly build roads. After nearly a year of construction, the Shanghai Jiangwan section was completed in June 1876 and officially put into operation in early July. The fate of the Songhu Railway can be described as tumultuous. Its subsequent reconstruction and demolition process not only witnessed the difficult struggle for railway autonomy in modern China, but also reflected the evolution of Shanghai's urban transportation system. The existence of this railway is not only an important milestone in China's modernization process, but also a historical witness to the forced intervention of foreign capital in the semi colonial background.
